Allergy Shots

Most people think of allergy shots as a simple convenience or even a luxury, but for me they were practically a lifesaver. Bad allergies can affect everything that you do. Chronic sinusitis, a depressed immune system, low energy level, aches and pains, and many other problems can be triggered by nothing more exotic than chronic allergies. Once you nasal airways get clogged and you immune system gets triggered unnecessarily, the effects can really spiral out to all sorts of other matters of well-being.

I used to get sinus infections all of the time when I was a kid. No one knew quite what the reason was, and they would simply treat the infections with antibiotics. Although these treatments would provide me with some immediate relief, in the long run they would give me even worse symptoms. The sinusitis would come back with an even greater ferocity when I got off of the medicine.

I actually began to take allergy shots one summer in response to my hay fever. I would get my sinus infections in the winter, so there was no reason to believe that one had anything to do with the other. Nonetheless, that following winter I only got one infection, and it was not very severe. Besides that, I slept better because my nose was not all clogged up all of the time. It was great to be feeling good for the very first time in my life.

Of course allergies shots are not effective in every case, nor are they always necessary. Some allergies are so sever that they can not really be effectively treated by allergy shots. For example, some people suffer from a severe peanut allergy. For these folks, the only solution is to completely and totally avoid peanuts whenever they can. Allergy shots simply will not work.

Nonetheless, for the vast majority of moderate to severe allergic rhinitis sufferers, allergy shots really make a lot of sense. A lot of people with occasional, mild allergies can do alright by just taking an antihistamine whenever they get a flareup, but people with worse problems need more drastic solutions. Shots take a while to kick in and do require regular treatments, but they have few risks associated with them and tend to work very well in the long run. Once you have been getting them regularly for two or three months, you will see a difference.
